Training of Anganwadi Teachers and Community Learning Centre Facilitators at Attappady
During our study on tribal students at the Model Residential School (MRS) in Palakkad, we identified two critical gaps in the education ecosystem in tribal regions, which are the need for stronger early childhood education and learning support beyond formal classrooms. In response, we launched a two-fold intervention in partnership with the District Administration of Palakkad and the Aspirational Block Fellowship Programme, targeting Anganwadi teachers and facilitators of Samoohya Padana Muri (Community Learning Centers) in Attappady.
We conducted a workshop for Anganwadi teachers in Attappady, with a focus on enhancing early childhood education. The sessions covered key areas such as building strong classroom cultures and enabling environments, developing reading habits, encouraging curiosity, and using games and storytelling to improve cognitive and socio-emotional skills in children. This effort aims to improve foundational learning skills of tribal children and ensure they are better prepared for formal schooling and education.
We further worked with the 43 Community Learning Centers across Attappady, training their facilitators to play a more effective role in supporting the education system. The programme covered topics such as fostering a learning culture, conducting assessments in reading and numeracy, and designing activities to improve foundational skills. Facilitators were also trained to broaden students' aspirations and connect them to the larger world. Together, these interventions are helping build a more supportive, inclusive, and inspiring learning environment for children in one of Kerala’s most underserved regions.
