Learning Assessment of Tribal Students at MRS Malampuzha

In collaboration with the District Administration of Palakkad, we conducted a learning assessment at the Model Residential School in Malampuzha, focusing on evaluating the foundational reading and numeracy skills of tribal students. This assessment aimed to gain insights into students’ learning levels and identify gaps in foundational learning.

Building on this, we undertook a comprehensive study on the broader educational landscape of tribal communities in Palakkad. The report highlighted key challenges such as:

  • The absence of mother tongue-based primary education

  • Limited educational support at home

  • Minimal exposure to the outside world that compromises aspirations, and

  • Barriers to independent learning among children

We found that all of these challenges resulted in increased student dropouts after the 12th standard and during college. We submitted evidence-based policy recommendations to both the district and state governments, focusing on learning pedagogy and community engagement in tribal education.

As part of the intervention efforts, we also facilitated capacity-building sessions for anganwadi teachers and community learning center facilitators, aimed at strengthening early childhood education and community support systems.
